Murata

A breathtaking transformation fusing incisive contemporary aesthetics with historic authenticity

SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2024 GUERNSEY DESIGN AWARDS

Within the context of this protected 18th-century residential building at the heart of St Peter Port, we created a comfortable and contemporary indoor/outdoor entertaining space with exquisite detailing.

A surgical incision into the historic external wall allows the space to open up into the garden – a modern intervention that retains the original quoins and preserves the significance of the original structure. Filled with natural light, the new covered space seamlessly connects the historic interior with the garden and sea views.

Granite removed from the new opening forms a new supporting wall that encloses and makes safe the historic granite steps to the street above. Steps to the seafront and a newly-formed  undercroft are transformed into a charming wine cellar. The overhang of the new flat roof ensures an efficient balance between shade and solar gain, while solar panels provide a discreet source of renewable energy.
