The Children’s Library

A tired municipal library, transformed into a world of wonder for little readers

The aim was to create an exciting, fantastical space at the Guille-Allès Library, where children can learn, have fun, and become relaxed around books and inspired to read. By adjusting to a child’s scale, the design introduces full-height walls of shelves which are explored via flying walkways and gantries, hidden passages and secret shelves. The result evokes the grand libraries of the past but with a markedly playful and modern twist.

It now represents one of Guernsey’s most valued community facilities and has been shortlisted for an RIBA regional award.
