The Children’s Library, Guille-Allès Library

A tired municipal library, transformed into a world of wonder for little readers

The aim was to create an exciting, fantastical space where children can learn and have fun, and in doing so become relaxed around books and inspired to read. By adjusting to a child’s scale, the design introduces full-height walls of shelves which are explored via flying walkways and gantries, hidden passages and secret shelves. The result evokes the grand libraries of the past but with a markedly playful and modern twist.

It now represents one of Guernsey’s most valued community facilities and has been shortlisted for an RIBA regional award.
