Pres de Sable (Doug’s Place) takes the Small Projects prize at the 2024 Guernsey Design Awards
StudiO’s own Doug Langlois has won the Small Projects prize at the 2024 Guernsey Design Awards for his amazing work on his home, Pres de Sable.
The judges praised Doug’s ingenuity and resourcefulness, particularly his commitment to sustainability and creativity within the constraints of a limited budget.
The project involved renovating and extending a 19th-century granite cottage at Sandy Hook, providing much-needed space and an improved living environment for the Langlois family. Removing the existing conservatory and lean-to made way for a new kitchen and family room, plus an additional bedroom upstairs.
Recycling and reuse were central to Doug’s vision. For example, the striking orange Hygena kitchen, which dates from 1969, was salvaged from a local farmhouse, with his kitchen design then tailored to accommodate it.
Doug accepted the award along with contractor Jack Farrell from Habitat, with whom he worked closely on the project.

Here’s what the judges had to say:
In an industry that is often defined by lavish expenditures, this award recognises those who demonstrate the skills of resourcefulness and ingenuity.
True innovation lies in the ability to do more with less, and this year’s winner exemplified efficiency, sustainability and creativity through meticulous planning, thoughtful design, and sheer determination.
Not only has this year’s winner produced a highly successful and coherent piece of architecture, but they have done so whilst navigating the limitations of a limited budget and thus showcasing the transformational power of creativity within constraints.
